You gotta be like a hooker...

While I was watching this weekend’s St-Pierre/Hardy PPV at the worst UFC watch party I have ever been to, my friend Piper made an interesting comment. But give me one second before I get to that. I got a message for our host, who I am not gonna call out here like an asshole.

When you have a PPV watch party, don’t order the PPV on your laptop then plug some old ass computer speakers into said laptop, then plug the whole ridiculous setup into your 50 inch LCD and play the fight over your shitty internet connection so we can watch in 10 second increments! This is a pretty fast moving sport, buddy, and that shit ain’t cutting it. Next time just order the PPV from fucking Comcast so we don’t have to miss the 99% of the St-Pierre/Hardy fight.

But I digress. Piper said: “to make it as an MMA fighter you gotta be like a good hooker: be ready any place and at anytime.” He’s right and that’s why I think this sport has taken over boxing. These guys are hungry. They wanna do battle. That’s what boxing was once. Here were some legendary battles: Ali/ Frazier, Bowe/Holyfield, Ali/Forman, Tyson/and every dude he fought. These guys wanted to destroy their opponents. Not anymore. That sport is watered down by money and corruption. Today’s boxing matches are not set up based on what will make the best battle; it’s all about the money.

MMA matchups are different. They try to put the best against the best. Who wants it more and who trained harder are what decides MMA fights, just like in the old days of boxing. I hope boxing can recover from this because it remains one of my favorite sports.  Maybe boxers need to take Piper’s advice and be like a good hooker.

I’m pretty fucking stoked about the future of this sport and I’m pretty excited about the next PPV, which is Silva/Maia in April. Except this time I think I’ll throw the party so I can watch the fucking thing in real HD and not have to miss the main event. So I guess if I am going to have a party, my first order of business is to figure out where I can get a hooker.
