A Little Bit of Outlaw...

Dear Friends:

Admit it, every single one of you has a little bit of fucking outlaw in you. I don’t care if you’re a member of the Hells Angels or a conservative housewife, every last one of us has those moments where we wish we could just do whatever the fuck we want and damm the consequences.

When I daydream about what I would do if I could get away with anything, here’s my ideal plan: I would borrow $250,000 from a loan shark and buy a Lamborghini. I would then drive down to Mexico with the hottest blonde I could find and set up a drug mule/wetback smuggling business so I could pay back the loan and make a little coin for myself. After I made enough money, I would take whatever cocaine was left over and head down the coast to the beach where I would live out the rest of my life teaching mercenaries how to overthrow the government while my new girlfriend teaches English classes at the local orphanage. But we’re trying to live in a society here, people, so I’m probably not ever gonna get to do that and I have to find other outlets for this nervous energy.

You may not have the urge to set up an illegal international smuggling ring, but I bet there are times when you wished life had a bit more of an edge. We all do and that’s why we like MMA so much. If you break this sport down to its core, the sport is basically hardcore human combat at its finest. We love every fucking second of it.

This letter is not meant for my fellow MMA fans, but those of you who have not come onboard with this…yet. I developed a few talking points about why you should at least give this sport a look.

First, we’re not the first society to do this, but we have really mastered the art. Roman gladiators, while badass in their own regard, were not exactly the upper echelon of society. For the most part they were forced to fight for their lives. Not us. We treat MMA fighters like heroes. Why, because we’re all a little scared of these dudes if I’m being honest here.

Second, I think there is an assumption out there among some of you that this is a sport of fiends. I think you see us sitting around a barbwire cage watching two guys fight to the death with glass glued to their knuckles. You take movies way too seriously, is what I think about that. This is a civilized sport. The fighters are highly trained athletes and there are rules. Not a lot. But we don’t make the winner fight a lion as a prize.

Finally, the culture that surrounds this sport allows you the opportunity to let a little bit of that outlaw out. You can’t let that stuff build up. Why not take in a fight. Go to a motorcycle rally. Get a tattoo. Go to a strip club. I mean, not all in one week. Just every once in a while. I bet you will discover something new about yourself. Next time you’re flipping through channels and you see a fight, why not just leave it on for a second. You’re flipping so there is obviously noting else to watch.

For my fellow MMA fans, I’d like to hear your predictions on this weekend’s St-Pierre/Hardy and Mir/Carwin fights. I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to a little bit of outlaw this weekend.

Thanks.
